Ava Mahnken, Villanova Chapter Member, Class of 2028:

My name is Ava, and I am a junior at Villanova University studying Communications with a minor in Psychology. I am also a member of the Villanova softball team! Outside of academics and athletics, I have always enjoyed building relationship and helping people. I first became involved with CogWell through one of my older teammates, Brooklyn Ostrowski. She spoke so highly of the organization and encouraged me to attend a meeting. Going into my first meeting, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but I quickly felt welcomed and comfortable. What stood out to me most was how open and supportive the environment was. The conversations were meaningful and educational on topics that are so important for college students as well as student-athletes. I immediately connected with the idea of promoting mental wellness and creating a space where people feel heard and supported through active listening.

Since joining CogWell, I have gained so much from the experience. One of the biggest things I have developed is my communication skills. The meetings have taught me how to engage in thoughtful conversations, express my ideas more efficiently, and communicate with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. More importantly, CogWell has helped me strengthen my listening skills. I have learned the importance of actively listening and creating space for others to share their stories. Beyond the skills I have developed, CogWell has also given me the opportunity to build meaningful connections with people across campus. As a student-athlete, it can sometimes be difficult to branch outside of your team, and CogWell has introduced me to individuals with unique experiences and viewpoints. Overall, being part of CogWell has been one of the best experiences of my college career, and it continues to help me grow both personally and professionally.
