Ava Mahnken, Villanova Chapter Member, Class of 2028

One way I take care of myself and maintain my mental health is by following a schedule. Through experience, I have realized that I am my best when I follow a structured pattern. This helps me stay on top of my game and keep my mind clear from any chaos. As a student-athlete, juggling school, softball, various leadership roles, and my personal life, I have realized that following a schedule allows me to dedicate all of my attention to one task at a time rather than being worried about the future. It is very important for me to make some time during my busy day to spend by myself.

Being with my friends, going out with my dogs, listening to music, and just having some downtime gives me an opportunity to relax. These activities show me that my worth is not determined by my constant productivity. Despite the fact that it is very important for me to help other people, I understand that I cannot help others unless I help myself first. There is an unwritten rule that has become deeply important to me: one needs to fill their own cup first before filling somebody else's because taking care of myself is not being selfish. This has taught me to listen and play my role as a teammate, friend, peer, and much more. Overall, it has now taught me how important it is for me to find that balance in order to take care of myself and others. I know when my mind is right, I can help other people the way they should be helped.
