Sara Adler, UPenn Chapter Member, Class of 2028

I initially joined CogWell as a way to spend time with my friends on Monday nights. At the time, I did not know much about the organization, but several of my friends were involved and enjoyed it. As a psychology major, I also thought it would be a good opportunity for me to engage with topics that interested me outside the classroom. I expected to attend meetings, learn a few new skills, and spend time with people I already knew. What I found, however, became much more than that.

Through CogWell, I found a community of people who genuinely care about supporting others and promoting mental well-being on campus. From my first meeting, I was welcomed into an environment that encouraged thoughtful conversations and connections with people who shared similar interests with me. What I appreciate most about CogWell is that it has encouraged me to think about mental health in a way that feels both practical and relevant to everyday life. In my classes and research, I spend a lot of time learning about theories and empirical findings. CogWell has given me a different perspective by focusing on how those ideas translate into real conversations and relationships.

Looking back, I can confidently say that I found much more than what I was originally looking for. While I joined because of my friends and my interest in psychology, I stayed because of the sense of purpose and belonging that CogWell provided. This organization has become an important part of my college experience, and I am grateful for the friendships, skills, and opportunities it has provided me with.
