As a student leader in my CogWell chapter, there have been so many ways in which I have benefitted. As a Division I student-athlete, and the current president of our chapter, I have discovered that being a leader means providing a space where everyone feels comfortable being their true self, seeking help, and helping others. One of the main ways in which CogWell has made me stronger is the development of my communication and active listening skills. Prior to becoming a member of this organization, I always thought that I needed to give the perfect advice if my friend or teammate had a problem. However, thanks to the workshops I have attended, I have found out that it is enough to just listen and ask relevant questions.
It has become important for me to listen and help people in any situation – from incoming freshmen to my teammates during softball games. Additionally, the activities that I have carried out from CogWell have helped me to leave my comfort zone and taught me how to lead discussion groups for freshmen. Public speaking and these discussions have improved my confidence and helped me become a leader. It was important to realize that the simplest things like discussing ways of coping with stress and making a person feel comfortable can contribute majorly in college.
As for professional growth, my experience at CogWell has contributed to my interests in communications and psychology. I understand now that empathy, teamwork, and communication play an important role in any field. But, most importantly, what I have learned at CogWell is that a leader doesn’t have to be knowledgeable about all the right answers; a leader should just support people and create a community
